Gud Boi 1a9ce915f3 Harden inbound actor handshakes
Registry probes need short retry deadlines, but applying their
one-second budget to every portal and child connection can terminate a
valid delayed actor with no client retry path.

Give ordinary pre-registration handshakes an independent ten-second
deadline. Normalize raw `msgspec.DecodeError` frames to
`TransportClosed` so malformed peers cannot cancel the shared IPC
nursery with decoder internals.

Cover malformed frames and the ordinary-vs-probe timeout distinction.

Gud Boi 0b63af020e Retry transient registrar handshakes
A loaded runner can accept a registry transport while delaying its
actor handshake beyond the first one-second attempt. Treating that
timeout as final classifies a healthy daemon as occupied and cascades
into unrelated discovery failures.

Retry connected handshake failures on fresh channels under a shared
three-second budget, while returning immediately for truly absent
listeners. Bound every connect-plus-handshake attempt, use incremental
backoff, and retain the one-second unauthenticated server limit.

Also bound shielded probe-channel cleanup to 200ms and cover the real
timeout, reconnection, backoff, fresh-channel, and stalled-close paths.

Gud Boi 5724c0516a Probe registrar capability in actor handshakes
Transport connect alone can select a foreign, stalled, or ordinary
actor endpoint as the registry. On macOS UDS this also exercises a
fragile connect-and-bail path before every root election.

Extend `Aid` with backward-compatible probe and registrar capability
fields, require a bounded typed handshake, and classify addresses as
absent, occupied, or confirmed registrars. Reject occupied endpoints
instead of binding over them.

Also,
- close `_connect_chan()` in `finally`
- bypass normal peer tracking for election probes
- preserve legacy registrar handshakes with unknown capability
- cover foreign listeners and idle registrar peer state

Gud Boi 84ec895150 Drop resolved channel log-guard TODO
Remove the stale `Channel.from_addr()` design note now that its
`at_least_level()` guard avoids inactive pretty-rendering work.

root 0e11ff7e9d Guard hot-path log calls to avoid payload rendering when disabled
Wrap `log.transport()` in `Channel.send()` and `log.runtime()` in
`PldRx.decode_pld()` with `log.at_least_level()` checks so that
expensive `pformat(payload)` / `repr(msg)` / `repr(pld)` calls are
skipped entirely when the respective log level is not active.

Previously the f-string arguments were eagerly evaluated before being
passed to the log method, even though `StackLevelAdapter.log()` would
then discard the message internally via its own `isEnabledFor()` check.
On high-frequency IPC paths this caused `pformat` to dominate CPU
usage (~60-70 %) as reported in #455.

This also restores the full diagnostic output (msg type, decoded
payload) that was temporarily commented out in 0373164 as a stopgap.

Resolves #455

Gud Boi cc42d38284 Mv core mods to `runtime/`, `spawn/`, `discovery/` subpkgs
Restructure the flat `tractor/` top-level private mods
into (more nested) subpackages:

- `runtime/`: `_runtime`, `_portal`, `_rpc`, `_state`,
  `_supervise`
- `spawn/`: `_spawn`, `_entry`, `_forkserver_override`,
  `_mp_fixup_main`
- `discovery/`: `_addr`, `_discovery`, `_multiaddr`

Each subpkg `__init__.py` is kept lazy (no eager
imports) to avoid circular import issues.

Also,
- update all intra-pkg imports across ~35 mods to use
  the new subpkg paths (e.g. `from .runtime._state`
  instead of `from ._state`)

Gud Boi 5ea721683b Use `.aid.uid` to avoid deprecation warns
I started getting annoyed by all the warnings from `pytest` during work
on macos suport in CI, so this replaces all `Actor.uid`/`Channel.uid`
accesses with `.aid.uid` (or `.aid.reprol()` for log msgs) across the
core runtime and IPC subsystems to avoid the noise.

This also provides incentive to start the adjustment to all
`.uid`-holding/tracking internal `dict`-tables/data-structures to
instead use `.msg.types.Aid`. Hopefully that will come a (vibed?) follow
up shortly B)

Deats,
- `._context`: swap all `self._actor.uid`, `self.chan.uid`,
  and `portal.actor.uid` refs to `.aid.uid`; use
  `.aid.reprol()` for log/error formatting.
- `._rpc`: same treatment for `actor.uid`, `chan.uid` in
  log msgs and cancel-scope handling; fix `str(err)` typo
  in `ContextCancelled` log.
- `._runtime`: update `chan.uid` -> `chan.aid.uid` in ctx
  cache lookups, RPC `Start` msg, registration and
  cancel-request handling; improve ctxc log formatting.
- `._spawn`: replace all `subactor.uid` with
  `.aid.uid` for child-proc tracking, IPC peer waiting,
  debug-lock acquisition, and nursery child dict ops.
- `._supervise`: same for `subactor.uid` in cancel and
  portal-wait paths; use `actor.aid.uid` for error dict.
- `._state`: fix `last.uid` -> `last.aid.uid` in
  `current_actor()` error msg.

Also,
- `._chan`: make `Channel.aid` a proper `@property` backed
  by `._aid` so we can add validation/typing later.
- `.log`: use `current_actor().aid.uuid` instead of
  `.uid[1]` for actor-uid log field.
- `.msg.types`: add TODO comment for `Start.aid` field
  conversion.

Gud Boi 052fe2435f Improve `Channel` doc-strs + minor cleanups
Flesh out missing method doc-strings, improve log msg formatting and
assert -> `RuntimeError` for un-inited tpt layer.

Deats,
- add doc-string to `.send()` noting `TransportClosed` raise
  on comms failures.
- add doc-string to `.recv()`.
- expand `._aiter_msgs()` doc-string, line-len reflow.
- add doc-string to `.connected()`.
- convert `assert self._transport` -> `RuntimeError` raise
  in `._aiter_msgs()` for more explicit crashing.
- expand `_connect_chan()` doc-string, note it's lowlevel
  and suggest `.open_portal()` to user instead.
- factor out `src_exc_str` in `TransportClosed` log handler
  to avoid double-call
- use multiline style for `.connected()` return expr.

Gud Boi 0b0c83e9da Drop `name=__name__` from all `get_logger()` calls
Use new implicit module-name detection throughout codebase to simplify
logger creation and leverage auto-naming from caller mod .

Main changes,
- drop `name=__name__` arg from all `get_logger()` calls
  (across 29 modules).
- update `get_console_log()` calls to include `name='tractor'` for
  enabling root logger in test harness and entry points; this ensures
  logic in `get_logger()` triggers so that **all** `tractor`-internal
  logging emits to console.
- add info log msg in test `conftest.py` showing test-harness
  log level

Also,
- fix `.actor.uid` ref to `.actor.aid.uid` in `._trace`.
- adjust a `._context` log msg formatting for clarity.
- add TODO comments in `._addr`, `._uds` for when we mv to
  using `multiaddr`.
- add todo for `RuntimeVars` type hint TODO in `.msg.types` (once we
  eventually get that all going obvi!)

Tyler Goodlet a23a98886c Even more `.ipc.*` repr refinements
Mostly adjusting indentation, noise level, and clarity via `.pformat()`
tweaks more general use of `.devx.pformat.nest_from_op()`.

Specific impl deats,
- use `pformat.ppfmt()/`nest_from_op()` more seriously throughout
  `._server`.
- add a `._server.Endpoint.pformat()`.
- add `._server.Server.len_peers()` and `.repr_state()`.
- polish `Server.pformat()`.
- drop some redundant `log.runtime()`s from `._serve_ipc_eps()` instead
  leaving-them-only/putting-them in the caller pub meth.
- `._tcp.start_listener()` log the bound addr, not the input (which may
  be the 0-port.

Tyler Goodlet 31544c862c More `.ipc.Channel`-repr related tweaks
- only generate a repr in `.from_addr()` when log level is >= 'runtime'.
 |_ add a todo about supporting this optimization more generally on our
   adapter.
- fix `Channel.pformat()` to show unknown peer field line fmt correctly.
- add a `Channel.maddr: str` which just delegates directly to the
  `._transport` like other pass-thru property fields.

Tyler Goodlet c00b3c86ea Hide more `Channel._transport` privates for repr
Such as the `MsgTransport.stream` and `.drain` attrs since they're
rarely that important at the chan level. Also start adopting
a `.<attr>=` style for actual attrs of the type versus a `<name>:
` style for meta-field info lines.

Tyler Goodlet 61df10b333 Move concrete `Address`es to each tpt module
That is moving from `._addr`,
- `TCPAddress` to `.ipc._tcp`
- `UDSAddress` to `.ipc._uds`

Obviously this requires adjusting a buncha stuff in `._addr` to avoid
import cycles (the original reason the module was not also included in
the new `.ipc` subpkg) including,

- avoiding "unnecessary" imports of `[Unwrapped]Address` in various modules.
  * since `Address` is a protocol and the main point is that it **does
    not need to be inherited** per
    (https://typing.python.org/en/latest/spec/protocol.html#terminology)
    thus I removed the need for it in both transport submods.
  * and `UnwrappedAddress` is a type alias for tuples.. so we don't
    really always need to be importing it since it also kinda obfuscates
    what the underlying pairs are.
- not exporting everything in submods at the `.ipc` top level and
  importing from specific submods by default.
- only importing various types under a `if typing.TYPE_CHECKING:` guard
  as needed.

Tyler Goodlet 3cc835c215 Mv `Actor._do_handshake()` to `Channel`, add `.aid`
Finally.. i've been meaning todo this for ages since the
actor-id-swap-as-handshake is better layered as part of the IPC msg-ing
machinery and then let's us encapsulate the connection-time-assignment
of a remote peer's `Aid` as a new `Channel.aid: Aid`. For now we
continue to offer the `.uid: tuple[str, str]` attr (by delegating to the
`.uid` field) since there's still a few things relying on it in the
runtime and ctx layers

Nice bonuses from this,
- it's very easy to get the peer's `Aid.pid: int` from anywhere in an
  IPC ctx by just reading it from the chan.
- we aren't saving more then the wire struct-msg received.

Also add deprecation warnings around usage to get us moving on porting
the rest of consuming runtime code to the new attr!

Tyler Goodlet 7a3c9d0458 Even more `tractor._addr.Address` simplifying
Namely reducing the duplication of class-fields and `TypeVar`s used
for parametrizing the `Address` protocol type,
- drop all of the `TypeVar` types and just stick with all concrete addrs
  types inheriting from `Address` only.
- rename `Address.name_key` -> `.proto_key`.
- rename `Address.address_type` -> `.unwrapped_type`
- rename `.namespace` -> `.bindspace` to better reflect that this "part"
  of the address represents the possible "space for binding endpoints".
 |_ also linux already uses "namespace" to mean the `netns` and i'd
   prefer to stick with their semantics for that.
- add `TCPAddress/UDSAddress.def_bindspace` values.
- drop commented `.open_stream()` method; never used.
- simplify `UnwrappedAdress` to just a `tuple` of union types.
- add logging to `USDAddress.open_listener()` for now.
- adjust `tractor.ipc/_uds/tcp` transport to use new addr field names.
2025-07-08 12:57:29 -04:00
Tyler Goodlet 7b3324b240 Add a big boi `Channel.pformat()/__repr__()`
Much like how `Context` has been implemented, try to give tons of high
level details on all the lower level encapsulated primitives, namely the
`.msgstream/.transport` and any useful runtime state.

B)

Impl deats,
- adjust `.from_addr()` to only call `._addr.wrap_address()` when we
  detect `addr` is unwrapped.
- add another `log.runtime()` using the new `.__repr__()` in
  `Channel.from_addr()`.
- change to `UnwrappedAddress` as in prior commits.
